Southeast Asia typically evokes rich and wet tropical forests. She and colleagues from the University of California, Irvine; William Paterson University; the University of Quebec; and more published these findings in the journal Nature Communications. Some of their work included collecting stalagmite samples from the Tham Doun Mai cave along the Ou River.
Much like tree rings, stalagmites have rings that contain datable signs of changing climate. As that water-mineral mixture drips from the stalactite, stalagmites form on the floor below, building over time, layer by layer.

The researchers note that the apparent reluctance to reveal political preferences is interesting because previous studies have shown that spouses share political views more than almost any other trait, with religious affiliation being the exception.
They point to two possible explanations. First, that humans desire compatibility in their long-term relationships, which, from an evolutionary perspective, should increase the likelihood of being able to raise offspring successfully.

By Tom McLaughlin. Over the past decade, online dating has become a common, fast, and efficient way to connect with a potential mate. So, for better or worse, how have digital technologies changed what dating and romance looks like today? To get to the heart of the matter, we checked in with Jim Brown , director of the Digital Studies Center and an associate professor of English at Rutgers University—Camden. For starters, how has the ever-important first date changed in the digital world?
The first date is traditionally understood as the time when we get to know someone, and when we investigate their biography, such as where they grew up, siblings, and basic interests. So if we already know personal details about our date, such as their profession, family, and hometown, does that mean the ice-breaker conversation is a thing of the past?
How do people use digital technologies to their advantage in constructing and presenting images of who they are? As a rhetorician who studies the digital, it always fascinates me how we present our identities in these digital spaces. These profiles are arguments; they are attempts to reveal what we want to reveal or to persuade people that we are interesting and worthy of time and attention. People are always careful about how they present themselves. Research by the Pew Center indicates that significant numbers of people have sought help from friends when making decisions about their profile.
Brown says that, rather than merely speeding up our choices, computer systems are trying to predict what we want based on data that we have provided. Dating sites and mobile apps use computers to help us make decisions, such as preselecting potential mates.
The Question: What is dating like at Brown?
Rajib Chanda found the social scene at Brown University so grim that he formed HUGS, a computer-dating service to match students based on answers to a questionnaire. The admittedly hokey notion of HUGS — it stands for Helping Undergraduates Socialize — drew an overwhelming response from campus sophisticates last Valentine’s Day: nearly one-third of Brown’s students, 1, in all, filled out questionnaires, including athletes and artists, fraternity brothers and rebels, heterosexuals and members of the gay and lesbian alliance.
Chanda, a senior fraternity president, attributed the success of HUGS to a yearning for old-fashioned courtship, a way for students to dip a toe into the pool of intimacy and sex rather than plunge headfirst. At colleges across the country, students voice a similar lament: there is no real dating scene here.

Their secure system pairs up users who have expressed mutual interest in one another. With over 1, users and a growing online presence, BlogDH was curious to speak with the creators of Brown Hookups in order to find out more about their goals, inspirations, and philosophies on love. Brown Hookups : The idea really came from the popularity of online dating recently.
Our thought was to create an app similar to Hinge and Tinder, but appeal specifically to the college population, and create a niche in the market by allowing students to have some fun thinking about who actually requested them! We thought people would appreciate an app where the purpose was upfront: a hookup, because that is often what people are actually looking for on these dating sites. We also decided that the idea of keeping people within their own network in this case, their university was safer and more comfortable for our intended user base.
BH : The first step is to submit the name of someone in the Brown community who you are interested in. BH will then send that person a random list of five names, including yours, from the BH friend list.
